This is the story of perhaps the most famous rock and roll star of all time – John Lennon – told by the woman who may have known him best. Cynthia’s story of her 10-year relationship with John begins in Liverpool and follows The Beatles’ success, John’s association with Yoko and the band’s breakup, to his untimely death at the age of 40. By virtue of Cynthia’s insider status with the Beatles, we get an intimate, humanizing, and candid look at John Lennon. The book focuses more on John as a person than on the Beatles and their influence. As a fan of Lennon’s music, it was interesting to read about his life in this light and see the complex, quirky elements of his character. A man of great intelligence and wit, he had a cruel streak that was difficult to read about, especially when Cynthia writes of the painful breakup of their marriage and the detrimental effects that it had on their son, Julian. In addition, the book gives a glimpse of the ‘60s era, the extravagant lifestyle of the Beatles, and an honest look at the high price of fame.
