I had three chapters left when I found out that this book had been selected as the 2006 Pulitzer Prize winner. If anyone had bothered to ask for my vote, I’d have said “Yea” to the selection as well. March had me hooked from the first page and the rest of the book didn’t disappoint. The premise is intriguing; Brooks has taken the absent character of Mr. March in Louisa May Alcott’s classic Little Women and told his story. What we see is an idealist, “a good, kind man,” thrown into the horrors of the Civil War. We see good and evil, black and white, turn grey. And we see the delicate balance of marriage teeter as the war tears both individuals and families apart. This is a great read, highly recommended.
